Can I Get Pregnant While Breastfeeding?

It is still possible to get pregnant, even while breastfeeding. This would mean you have to breastfeed a little less than you normally do. Exclusive breastfeeding, or the process of breastfeeding your baby full-time will be a barrier in this situation.

You can breastfeed at lesser hours than most if you wish to conceive while breastfeeding. You can also resort to breast milk pumping to sustain the nutrients your baby receives without nursing.

In getting pregnant while you are on breastfeeding, there are a few factors you need to consider and some things you will have to do to achieve this goal.

There is what we call the lactation amenorrhea method, where breastfeeding exclusively may delay fertility and ovulation for menstruating. This usually happens when your baby is still younger than six months of age.

When your baby reaches the six month of age, your baby starts to learn different methods of feeding like drinking from a baby bottle, or a baby cup. They also start to get curious with solid food.

At past six months of age, they start to extract lesser breast milk from the mother. It is that, or they have a schedule of preference when to breastfeed from the mother. For example, they only prefer nursing only at certain times like in the evening.

At this stage, you will be ready to be fertile again. You have to remember that there are instances that menstruation may come beforehand than ovulation. In other circumstances, ovulation may happen before your menstruation arrives.

The important note is that menstruation may or may not indicate fertility or your ovulation has already happened.

Can I Get Pregnant While Breastfeeding Even Without Menstruating Yet?

Ovulation happens two weeks before your menstruation. Even during breastfeeding, you will know if you are ovulating. This ovulation may or may not mean you are fertile.

It is called the luteal incompetency, whereas the uterus is not ready yet for fertilization but is ready to menstruate.

It is common knowledge that the ovulation of a woman postpartum returns after six weeks. You are fertile from six weeks onwards if your ovulation has started.

It is a different story when you are breastfeeding, because it causes you to have temporary infertility. It could take more months to a year if you are waiting for your fertility to return if you are breastfeeding.

As long as you are ovulating and is luteal competency, there are chances that you will get pregnant before your first period after giving birth.

Well, it is a process to follow when you are trying to get pregnant while breastfeeding. It is not immediately possible to get pregnant the moment you want to. Especially during breastfeeding, there are some factors you will need to counter.

Take for instance lactational amenorrhea – you will need to slow down on exclusive breastfeeding and wear down the effects. It may take a few months to a year to gain back your fertility after temporarily losing it.

To get ready for pregnancy while breastfeeding, you can nurse your baby at lesser hours during the day and not breastfeed at night. If ever, you can still pump breast milk instead of breastfeeding since the lactational amenorrhea does not work for breast milk pumping.

Breastfeeding is already a contraception in itself. The lactational amenorrhea prevents you from fertility.

In order to assure the temporary infertility, continue breastfeeding exclusively right after postpartum. This way, the baby will only breastfeed for more than six months, until you wean your baby and stop breastfeeding from 18-24 months if you wish.

Make sure you do not introduce your baby to any methods of feeding except breastfeeding within the six months that they are exclusively breastfeeding. This will distract their feeding habits of breastfeeding and they may start to prefer other ways of drinking milk or eating solid food.

With all things considered, it is still best to consult with your doctors regarding conception and other medical inquiries. Make sure you prepare for your consultations when you set your appointment to answer your question, “can I get pregnant while breastfeeding?”
