One of the most overwhelming events in the life of a woman is childbirth. You just delivered your angel into the world. You lost nutrients and blood. You gained a healthy baby. It’s all a whirlwind of existential emotions. 

But, get into the program – get healthy again, get fit and gain back the nutrients you lost! You need to heal. Let’s start with what not to eat after delivery, then?

Just because you are a mother, it does not mean you have to let go of self-care for your baby. Being a mother now means you have another life to take good care of. So, make sure you always include yourself in the equation of looking after.

In regaining your health, the first thing you turn to is food. Food is, after all, the main source of nutrients for everyone. But, not all the foods will be good for your health post partum. 

It is important to keep in mind that while everything may be healthy or organic, not everything will be good for you.

Stray far from these foods that will not be of much help and focus on foods that will help your body heal from childbirth. If you are also looking forward to breastfeeding, make sure you check for food that will be good for breast milk production.

What Not to Eat After Delivery

Alcoholic beverages, fermented beverages and foods, dairy products, shellfish, eggplants are just examples of food that trigger the release of histamine.

These food may not be healthy since it helps the release of histamine in the body. Once the body releases the histamine, it causes numerous allergic reactions such as rashes, hives and what not.

It is important to remember that postpartum, there are changes you could be experiencing. This includes the changes in allergic reactions. You may be allergic to shellfish before – now, you can also be allergic to too much of chicken or eggs.

Also take into consideration the healing you need to go through after giving birth to a baby. Your body is in dire need of regaining the lost nutrients, healing the wounds and keeping the milk production productive if you are a breastfeeding mother.

Chocolate, caffeine, chilli, fried food, greasy and oily food are examples of more food to avoid because of their unhealthy contents.

We all know caffeine is a no-no in any health situation, or at least, it could only be consumed at a moderate serving. Eating chocolate, chilli and greasy unhealthy food is like drinking caffeine while breastfeeding.

What you eat also affects your breast milk and the baby you are breastfeeding. So eating chocolate, all these greasy food, chilli, they also affect your baby.

Acidic foods, or some citrus foods should also be taken with caution. Especially if you are breastfeeding your newborn baby, it is important to remember that your baby’s stomach may still be adjusting. 

Eating or drinking acidic or citrus foods affect your breast milk, which might cause your baby to spit or have mini vomits. This is because your baby’s gastrointestinal tract might not be able to adjust right away.

What Not to Eat After Delivery, but Everyday as a Mother

It is important to eat well and hydrate from time to time postpartum. These foods will help you with that extra boost in regaining your strong healthy:

  • Salmon

Salmon is amazingly filled with the nutrients your body needs. It is also very beneficial for your breast milk, benefiting your baby with the nutrients to strengthen their immune and nervous system.

  • Healthy Red, Brown or Purple Rice

If you are a rice eater, this is perfect for you! Substitute white rice for these amazing rice variants. They help in providing healthy carbohydrates without the excessive sugar that causes obesity and unhealthy carbs. This will provide you with healthy calories to give better quality of breast milk to your child.

  • Iron and Protein Rich Foods

The first thing you need to do after giving birth is improving your health and creating a healthy lifestyle for your baby through breastfeeding. Iron-rich and protein-rich food will give you the energy and the strength postpartum. 

  • Green Vegetables

These leafy healthy food is really important in gaining back the lost vitamins and minerals that you have lost giving birth. Vegetables are also a good example of foods that can provide calcium without being a dairy product.

Child delivery is not an easy experience for mothers, but it is worth the pain and the stress. Give your body time to heal, always put your health and your baby’s health first. It may be hard to actually stay away from what not to eat after delivery but you’ll be thankful in the end.
